South Australia's regions under the microscope

Onkaparinga Council continues to have the largest share of South Australia's population, with one in ten South Australian's living in Onkaparinga at 30 June 2001, according to the Regional Statistics, South Australia publication released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Regional Statistics, South Australia reveals a comprehensive picture of the state's regions over the five years to 2001 by comparing local government areas, examining the growth and decline in different regions and revealing local area trends.

Other interesting facts contained in the publication include:
    • The fastest population increases were in Victor Harbor (3.7%), Adelaide (3.1%) and Alexandrina (2.4%). The fastest decreases occurred in Peterborough (-3.4 %), Le Hunte (-2.9%) and Coober Pedy (-2.5%).
    • Roxby Downs had the highest crude birth rate in 2000-01 (27.2 births per thousand population), while Kimba had the lowest (4.1). The highest crude birth rate in the metropolitan area was in Playford (15.8).
    • Walkerville had the highest crude death rate in 2000-01 with 14.8 deaths per thousand population. Karoonda East Murray was next with 13.3. The lowest were in Roxby Downs (0.3) and Cleve (3.2).
    • The highest estimated unemployment rates, for the June quarter 2001, were in Playford (17.8%), Ceduna (14.8%), Peterborough (11.8%) and Coober Pedy (11.7%). The lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Kimba (1.3%), Tatiara (1.4%) and Roxby Downs (1.7%). The state's unemployment rate was 7.4% for the same period.
    • The highest average residential property sale prices were recorded in Walkerville ($299,500) and Burnside ($257,300). The average price of residential property sales in non-metropolitan South Australia ranged from $24,000 in Peterborough to $154,700 in Victor Harbor.
    • There were 6,731 new residential dwelling units in the year ended 30 June 2001, with 28.3% in non-metropolitan South Australia. Onkaparinga (with 718 new residential dwelling units) and Salisbury (650) had the greatest number of approvals, while Alexandrina (237), Victor Harbor (180) and Mount Barker (173) had the greatest number of approvals in non-metropolitan South Australia.
