Real Growth of 5% in manufacturing turnover - ABS

According to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today Australian manufacturing turnover (in current prices) rose by $8,592m or 4% from $211,963m in 1997-98 to reach $220,555m in 1998-99. As prices for manufactured goods fell by about 1% over the year, real turnover growth of approximately 5% has occurred.

Employment in Australian manufacturing decreased by 1% between June 1998 and June 1999 from 943,600 people to 937,400 people.

Nationally, all nine manufacturing industry subdivisions recorded an increase in current price turnover, with the largest being non-metallic mineral product manufacturing (up 12%), followed by printing, publishing and recorded media (up 10%) and machinery and equipment manufacturing (up 6%).

The largest increases in current price manufacturing turnover among the States and Territories was in New South Wales and Victoria (both up 5%), Queensland (up 4%) and Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory (both up 3%).

The manufacturing industry subdivision with the largest percentage decrease in employment and the second largest fall in absolute terms was textile, clothing, footwear and leather manufacturing (down 9% or 6,900 persons). Machinery and equipment manufacturing recorded the second largest percentage decrease, as well as the largest fall in absolute terms (down 4% or 7,800 persons).

The industry subdivision with the largest percentage and absolute increase in employment was Petroleum, coal, chemical and associated product manufacturing (up 5% or 4,700 persons), followed by printing, publishing and recorded media (up 4% or 4,000 persons).

Manufacturing employment fell in the Australian Capital Territory (down 7%), Tasmania (down 5%), South Australia and the Northern Territory (both down 3%), Victoria (down 2%) and Western Australia (down 1%), but rose in Queensland (up 2%) and New South Wales (up 1%).
