Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
OVERVIEW
This was a one-off user funded survey, providing estimated origin of guest splits of room nights for the year ended September 1995. Forms were mailed to all hotel, motel and guest house establishments with facilities which were included in the quarterly Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA) collection (about 4,800 establishments). Room nights data was released for 15 origin groups (Australian States and Territories plus overseas origins) at the statistical division and higher level, plus Cairns, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, the Great Barrier Reef Islands and Alice Springs. Data was also supplied by star grade category.
PURPOSE
The survey was funded by the Tourism Forecasting Council (TFC). The TFC needed the information primarily for developing detailed forecasts of future demand from visitors, at the regional level. The forecasts were also required by other government bodies, at all levels, to help tourism development strategy policies. The information is used to help make government decisions about infrastructure required to support tourism demand. The data is also an important input into decisions by Commonwealth and State government tourism promotion bodies in allocation of marketing budgets. At the local government level, by providing more accurate information on future tourism demand, the data facilitates the more effective monitoring of developers' activities.
SCOPE
The percentage of total room nights occupied by place of origin of the guests was collected. There were 15 place of origin groups:
- New South Wales;
- Victoria;
- Queensland;
- South Australia;
- Western Australia;
- Tasmania;
- the Northern Territory;
- the Australian Capital Territory; and
- seven specified country groups
The data was collected from the approximately 4,800 hotels, motels and guest houses which were included in the quarterly Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA) at that time i.e. hotels (licensed to operate a public bar), motels and guest houses which have facilities (i.e. bath/shower and toilet) in most rooms and have breakfast available for guests. Hotels, motels and guest houses with fewer than five rooms were excluded from the scope of the collection.
Data collected related to the 12 months ending 30 September 1995. The results were applied to STA data on room nights in respect of the financial year 1994-95.
