    Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

    OVERVIEW

Television Services is a survey which directly collects financial, employment and activity information about licensed private sector television broadcasters (comprising commercial free-to-air and subscription broadcasters) which are a subset of Television services industry (ANZSIC class 9122). The survey also collects production activity data from the two public broadcasters. All other Television services units including community broadcasters classified to ANZSIC 9122 were excluded from the survey.

The methodology for the 2002/03 cycle has changed since 1999-00 so caution should be used in making any historical comparisons. In 1999/00 the ABS utilised Australian Broadcasting Asssociation aggregated administrative data for the purposes of supplementing annual published financial data for commercial free-to-air broadcasters in Australia. Activity data was still directly collected by ABS for free-to-air businesses. Previous survey results for 1996/97 were also revised to reflect ABA aggregates. The 2002-03 collection directly collected all data from individual units, rather than use aggregated data.

    PURPOSE

The key purpose of the Television Services survey is to provide measures on the performance and structure of licensed private sector television broadcasters (comprising commercial free-to-air and subscription broadcasters) which are a subset of Television services industry (ANZSIC class 9111). This includes identifying the nature and structure of the industry/activity in terms of employment, income, costs, production activity and the contribution to the Australian economy.

The survey also collects production activity data from the two public broadcasters and all private sector broadcasting businesses.

    SCOPE
The scope of the this collection included only a subset of the ANZSIC classe 9122 Television Services.

The scope included businesses in Australia that generated income predominantly from commercial-free-to- air, public and subscription television broadcasting. Services provided by these businesses included the production of television programs, whether live or on tape or other recording medium, for own use. Community broadcasters were also excluded.
