    Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

    OVERVIEW
Housing Motivations and Intentions, Western Australia was conducted in October 2012 as a supplement to the Monthly Population Survey. It collects data from households in a sample of private dwellings and provides information on the motivators that affect Western Australians in the choice of their current dwelling (and location of that dwelling) and their intentions regarding their future choice of housing. Some characteristics regarding their previous dwelling were also collected.

Data items collected on behalf of the household include current dwelling structure and tenure, number of bedrooms, origin of home ownership and total household income. Data items regarding previous dwelling, housing motivations and housing intentions were answered on behalf of only one person who was randomly selected from the household.

    PURPOSE
There have been substantial changes in the residential housing scene since the last "Housing Motivations and Intentions" survey was conducted in Western Australia in 2005, and prior to that 1998. A repeat of this survey in 2012 will provide state government, in particular the WA Department of Housing; WA Department of Planning and WA Department for Communities, with an updated picture of the motivators that affect WA households in their choice of current dwelling and their intentions regarding their future choice of housing. Results from the previous surveys were used by state government to plan and develop housing policies.

    The principle objectives are to:
    1. understand current and future housing intentions and, therefore, assist in the development of housing policy, planning legislation and development regulation
    2. understand the impact of significant changes in housing motivations and intentions since the previous survey was conducted in 2005

    SCOPE
The HM&I survey was conducted as a supplement to the ABS Monthly Population Survey (MPS) in October 2012. It was conducted on a subset of the full sample of private dwellings in WA that were included in the MPS. It covered all persons who were usual residents of private dwellings except:
  • members of the Australian permanent defence forces
  • certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, customarily excluded from censuses and surveys
  • overseas residents in Australia
  • members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependents) stationed in Australia
  • people living in discrete Indigenous communities (for operational reasons).

Coverage rules were applied to ensure that each person was associated with only one dwelling, and hence had only one chance of selection in the survey.
