Purpose
To provide an insight and establish trends in the Adelaide taxi industry based on quantitative evidence, for the benefit of regulatory and commercial users.

Description
The Adelaide Taxi Industry Baseline Study was performed in 1996, and subsequent studies, funded by the South Australia Passenger Transport Research and Development Fund, are planned every two years.

Under the guidance of a reference group, data were assembled from a variety of sources including driver worksheets, rank observations, analysis of radio booking data, accreditation data, commissioned surveys of customers and job advertisements (for drivers).

In a series of nine two-week surveys, driver worksheets were sent out to a sample of 100 drivers. Radio booking data were obtained from all radio companies covering the entire 1996 period of operation. Nine rank observation surveys were conducted over 24 metropolitan sites for one week periods (typically consisting of four hours observation per day). These observations used 23 trained observers completing specialised field sheets.
