OVERVIEW

This electronic publication details summary data for registration year 2004 for selected underlying causes of death and multiple causes of death.

This publication contains preliminary summary statistics on specific causes of death which accounts for 93% of all deaths. Chapters XVIII Symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified and Chapter XX External causes of morbidity and mortality have been excluded from this preliminary issue, due to quality issues affecting processing of the data. Counts of specific causes detailed in Tables 1 and 2 are also subject to change, due to possible changes to cause of death codes. The extent of these amendments to the data is expected to be minimal.

Final results for 2004 will be available in Causes of Death Australia (Cat 3303.0) which is due for release 24 February 2006. This publication will contain the full standard set of tables including perinatal deaths and details on all Chapters of underlying causes of death and multiple causes of death.

SECTION 1 UNDERLYING CAUSE OF DEATH

INTRODUCTION

All deaths registered in 2004 have been coded using the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) as released by the World Health Organization.

CAUSES OF DEATH

There were 132,508 deaths registered in 2004, consisting of 68,395 male and 64,113 female deaths. Diseases of the circulatory system (cardiovascular disease) were the underlying cause of death of 35.9% of all deaths registered in 2004 with Malignant neoplasms (cancer) contributing a further 28.7%. Another significant contributor was Diseases of the respiratory system (8.8%).

The difference between the numbers of deaths due to Diseases of the circulatory system and Malignant neoplasms continues to narrow.

DISEASES OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Diseases of the circulatory system were the underlying cause of 47,512 deaths in 2004, a 2.7% decrease from the 48,835 deaths in 2003. There were 13,099 male deaths and 11,403 female deaths attributed to Ischaemic heart diseases. This represents 51.6% of all deaths with an underlying cause of Diseases of the circulatory system. Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke) (12,034 deaths) comprised 25.3% and Pulmonary heart diseases and diseases of pulmonary circulation and other forms of heart disease (6,615 deaths) comprised 13.9%.

MALIGNANT NEOPLASMS (CANCER)

Cancer was the underlying cause of 21,376 male deaths and 16,604 female deaths in 2004, a 1.1% increase on the 37,558 deaths in 2003. Leading types of Cancer included Malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs (27.5% of all Malignant neoplasms) and Lung cancer (19.1%). Malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs recorded a 2.1% decrease between 2003 and 2004 while Lung Cancer increased by 4.1%. Malignant melanoma of skin (1,208 deaths) recorded a 6.7% increase, a continuation of the trend over recent years.

Breast cancer and prostate cancer both recorded decreases of 2.2% and 2.8% respectively, in the number of deaths registered between 2003 and 2004. Breast cancer contributed 15.9% of all female cancer deaths while prostate cancer was assigned as the underlying cause in 12.9% of all male cancer deaths.

DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

In 2004, there were 11,607 deaths registered due to Diseases of the respiratory system, a 2.4% decrease from the 11,892 deaths in 2003. The major contributors to these deaths in 2004 were Chronic lower respiratory diseases (including asthma, emphysema and bronchitis) (49.8%) and Influenza and pneumonia (29.0%). There were more male deaths (3,182) than female deaths (2,595) due to Chronic lower respiratory diseases, while deaths due to Influenza and pneumonia were higher for females (1,876) than males (1,486).

SECTION 2 MULTIPLE CAUSES OF DEATH

INTRODUCTION

Multiple causes of death include all causes and conditions reported on the death certificate (i.e. both underlying and associated causes; see Glossary for further details).

NUMBER OF MULTIPLE CAUSES

For the 132,508 deaths registered in 2004, there were 403,668 causes reported giving a mean of 3.0 causes per death. In 19.6% of all deaths, only one cause was reported, whereas 56.3% of deaths were reported with three or more causes. The mean number of causes reported per death varies with age, sex and underlying cause of death.

RELATIONSHIPS OF CAUSES

Malignant neoplasms (cancer) were the underlying cause of death for 37,980 deaths in 2004. It was reported as the only cause of death in 37.5% of these deaths. The most common associated cause reported with Cancer was Influenza and pneumonia (7.9% of these deaths).

Diabetes mellitus was reported alone in 1.4% of deaths where it was the underlying cause in 2004. The most common associated causes reported with Diabetes mellitus were Ischaemic heart diseases (reported in 52.3% of Diabetes mellitus deaths), Hypertensive diseases (30.2%), Renal failure (25.3%) and Cerebrovascular diseases (22.6%).

Influenza and pneumonia was reported alone in 31.3% of deaths where it was the underlying cause. However, it is the most common associated cause for a number of other illnesses and diseases reported as the underlying cause. It is an associated cause for 32.5% of deaths due to Chronic lower respiratory diseases (including asthma, emphysema and bronchitis). When the underlying cause was Heart failure, Influenza and pneumonia was an associated cause in 23.7% of cases.
