APRIL KEY POINTS

ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original terms, April 2015 imports on an international merchandise trade basis were $22,049m, an increase of $936m (4%) on the revised March 2015 merchandise imports of $21,113m.

PRELIMINARY BALANCE OF PAYMENTS GOODS IMPORTS

Preliminary analysis shows that goods debits (imports) on a balance of payments basis in original terms rose $507m (2%) between March and April 2015.

In seasonally adjusted terms, goods debits rose $1,145m (5%) between March and April 2015 to $23,695m. The components driving this rise were:
  • capital goods, up $546m (10%), driven by machinery and industrial equipment, up $1,232m (69%)
  • intermediate and other merchandise goods, up $375m (4%), driven by fuels and lubricants, up $449m (19%)
  • consumption goods, up $314m (4%), driven by non-industrial transport equipment, up $285 (18%).

Partly offsetting these rises was the non-monetary gold component, down $90m (24%).
