JUNE KEY POINTS
VALUE OF CONSTRUCTION WORK DONE, VOLUME TERMS
TREND ESTIMATES
- The trend estimate of building work done rose 1.9% in the June quarter 2005. The main contribution to this rise was from non-residential building (+4.7%). Residential building rose (+0.2%).
- Engineering work rose 3.2% in the June quarter 2005.
- Total construction work done rose 2.6% in the latest quarter.
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of building work rose 5.9% in the June quarter 2005, to a record level of $14,010.9m. Residential building rose 3.4%, to $9,097.5m. Non-residential building rose 10.8%, to $4,913.4m, the highest level since the March quarter 1990.
- Engineering work done rose 0.9%, to $8,037.0m, in the June quarter 2005, the highest level on record. Work done for the private sector rose 3.1%, to $4,745.8m, also a record. This rise was partly offset by a fall in work done for the public sector of 2.1%, to $3,291.2m.
- Total construction work done rose 4.0%, to a record $22,048.0m, in the latest quarter.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE
This publication provides an early indication of trends in building and engineering construction activity. The data are estimates based on a response rate of approximately 80% of the value of both building and engineering work done during the quarter. More comprehensive and updated results will be released in Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 14 October 2005 and in Engineering Construction Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8762.0) on 12 October 2005.
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
A new base year, 2003-04, has been introduced into the chain volume estimates which has resulted in revisions to growth rates in subsequent periods. In addition, the chain volume estimates have been re-referenced to 2003-04, thereby preserving additivity in the quarters after the reference year. Re-referencing affects the levels of, but not the movements in, chain volume estimates.
Time series spreadsheets have been released in Excel format for the first time with this issue. A concordance between the old Lotus 1,2,3 spreadsheets and the new Excel spreadsheets is available in 'Information Paper: Changes to Ausstats Tables for Construction Work Done, Australia, Preliminary' (cat. no. 8755.0.55.001).

TREND PERCENTAGE CHANGE
TOTAL CONSTRUCTION
Sustained strong growth in the engineering construction sector, coupled with rises in building work in recent quarters, has driven total construction work done to record levels.
ENGINEERING
Engineering construction work done has increased for seventeen successive quarters.
BUILDING
Total building work is now showing rises in the past two quarters after two quarters of decline.
RESIDENTIAL
Residential building work is now relatively flat after three quarters of decline.
NON-RESIDENTIAL
Non-residential work has risen strongly in the last three quarters.

Construction work done has grown in Queensland for the past eight quarters. Construction work done in Western Australia has grown for the last six quarters.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
TASMANIA
Construction work done in South Australia shows a general rise since December 2000. In Tasmania, construction work done now shows rises in the last two quarters.
NORTHERN TERRITORY
AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
Construction work done in the Northern Territory is now showing strong growth for the past three quarters. The Australian Capital Territory now shows rises for the past two quarters.
