ABOUT THIS ELECTRONIC RELEASE

This electronic release presents quarterly government finance statistics (GFS) on an accrual accounting basis. All tables are presented in GFS operating statement format for the general government sector, with the exception of Table 2 which presents data for the public non financial corporations sector.

Commencing with this issue, quarterly GFS are being released for the current financial year only. Quarterly GFS are preliminary aggregations of public sector data and are replaced each year by the publication of final annual GFS. Data for previous quarters therefore, will be replaced by final annual GFS for the 2003-04 financial year which are due for release on 15 April 2005 in Government Finance Statistics 2003-04 Cat. No. 5512.0.

The March quarter 2005 release will contain the September, December and March quarter data for Tables 1 to 4 and the individual state and local tables for the September and December quarters.

The March quarter 2005 issue is expected to be released on 31 May 2005 and the June quarter 2005 on 6 September 2005, one day before the release of the March quarter 2005 and June quarter 2005 National Accounts publications respectively. Users should check the ABS Release Advice closer to the date for confirmation of the release date.

DECEMBER QUARTER 2004 KEY FIGURES: ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT

September quarter 2004 to December quarter 2004 movements -
  • In original terms, taxation revenue rose $7,149m to $69,609m, due mainly to increases in taxes on income for individuals and enterprises.
  • The general government GFS Net operating balance, in original terms, rose $4,165m to $5,311m.
  • In original terms, the general government GFS Net lending position rose $2,783m, from $1,075m to $3,858m.

QUARTERLY NATIONAL ACCOUNTS PUBLIC SECTOR MEASURES - KEY FIGURES

The table below includes the key public sector aggregates for the December quarter 2004 from the forthcoming national accounts publication. The key figures shown include Government Final Consumption Expenditure and Gross Fixed Capital Formation for general government and public corporations, seasonally adjusted for current prices and chain volume terms.
  • In seasonally adjusted chain volume terms, total general government final consumption expenditure rose 1.2% in December quarter 2004.
  • General government gross fixed capital formation, in seasonally adjusted chain volume terms, rose 2.1% in December quarter 2004.
