JANUARY KEY POINTS
CURRENT PRICES
- The trend estimate rose 0.1% in January 2019. This follows a rise of 0.1% in December 2018, and a rise of 0.2% in November 2018.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate rose 0.1% in January 2019. This follows a fall of 0.4% in December 2018, and a rise of 0.5% in November 2018.
- In trend terms, Australian turnover rose 2.8% in January 2019 compared with January 2018.
- The following industries rose in trend terms in January 2019: Food retailing (0.3%), Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.2%), and Clothing, footwear and personal accessories retailing (0.1%). Other retailing (0.0%) was relatively unchanged. Household goods retailing (-0.2%), and Department stores (-0.4%) fell in trend terms in January 2019.
- The following states and territories rose in trend terms in January 2019: Victoria (0.2%), Queensland (0.2%), Western Australia (0.3%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.1%), and Tasmania (0.1%). New South Wales (0.0%), and South Australia (0.0%) were relatively unchanged. The Northern Territory (-0.5%) fell in trend terms in January 2019.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
This issue includes online retail turnover estimates for the January 2019 reference month and updated consumer sales estimates for the December 2018 quarter. The estimates are provided and explained in the appendix section of this publication.
The ABS intends to cease publishing a PDF as part of the release of Retail Trade (cat. no. 8501.0). All of the information that is contained in the PDF will be available elsewhere in this release. The March quarter 2019 issue, released on 4 July 2019, is expected to be the final release with a PDF. Should you have any concerns regarding this transition, please contact client.services@abs.gov.au.
