OCTOBER KEY POINTS

The effects of the poor seasonal conditions in the eastern states of Australia continue to be reflected in the data for the 12 months to October 2018.

Livestock and meat slaughter monthly trend movements for October 2018:

  • Cattle slaughter remained steady for the month ending October 2018 compared with the previous month and increased by 72,400 head (or 11.9%) year-on-year.
  • Calf slaughter increased by 2,100 head (or 4.9%) in the month ending October 2018 compared with the previous month and increased by 10,200 head (or 28.9%) year-on-year.
  • Sheep slaughter decreased by 10,300 head (or 1.2%) for the month ending October 2018 compared with the previous month but increased by 208,300 head (or 30.8%) year-on-year.
  • Lamb slaughter decreased, down 49,800 head (or 2.8%) for the month ending October 2018 compared with the previous month and the lowest number slaughtered since October 2012. Year-on-year, numbers slaughtered decreased by 209,900 head (or 10.9%).
  • Pig slaughter increased by 500 head (or 0.1%) for the month ending October 2018 compared to the previous month and increased by 7,900 head (or 1.8%) year-on-year.
