TREND ESTIMATES

  • The trend estimate for sheep slaughterings fell for the tenth consecutive month, to 703,700 due mainly to ongoing drought conditions in some areas. The July 2003 trend estimate was the lowest monthly figure recorded since February 1984.
  • Mutton production fell for the tenth consecutive month, to 14,200 tonnes; this was the lowest monthly figure recorded since February 1984 . Lower numbers sent to slaughter are resulting in lower mutton production.
  • The trend estimate for pigs slaughterings rose for the tenth consecutive month, to 489,000.
