(a) Data are for total five state/territory (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory combined), based on state or territory of usual residence. Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory are excluded due to the small numbers of registered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths.
(b) Deaths occurred on Norfolk Island from 1 July 2016 are included in this publication. See Explanatory Note 5 for more information.
(c) Deaths per 1,000 standard population. Standardised death rates use the age distribution of total persons in the Australian population at 30 June 2001 as the standard population.
(d) Deaths per 1,000 population.
(e) Infant deaths per 1,000 live births.
(f) Rates presented for total five state/territory are based on three year averages. They are calculated for each calendar year and then averaged for the three years ending in the year in the table heading.
(g) Deaths per 1,000 estimated resident population for 2007 and population projections for 2016 and 2017.

Births data has been included to allow for the calculation of infant mortality rates in this publication.
