INNOVATION STILL IN DEVELOPMENT
One in four businesses reported having innovation still in development as at 30 June 2012. Marketing methods and goods or services were the most commonly reported types of innovation that were still in development (both 12%). Organisational/managerial processes, at 9%, was the type of innovation least likely to be in development as at 30 June 2012.
The proportion of businesses that reported innovation still in development was greater for each successive employment size range, from 20% for businesses with 0-4 persons employed to 54% for businesses with 200 or more persons employed.
With the exception of marketing methods, the propensity of businesses to report each of the other types of innovation as still in development increased with each successive employment size range. Businesses with 20-199 persons employed were most likely to report marketing methods as still in development (18%).
By industry, businesses in Manufacturing were most likely to report innovation still in development (38%), followed by Wholesale trade and Information media and telecommunications (both 32%). Transport, postal and warehousing recorded the lowest proportion of businesses with innovation still in development (13%).
The highest proportion of businesses with new goods or services and organisational/managerial processes still in development were in the Manufacturing industry (23% and 18% respectively). One in five businesses in the Arts and recreation services industry reported marketing methods still in development, while in the Electricity, gas, water and waste services industry, 19% of businesses reported new operational processes (19%). This made those industries the most likely to report these types of innovation as still in development.
