ATTEMPTED BREAK-IN
Australian households experienced an estimated 295,600 incidents of attempted break-in during the 12 months prior to interview. Most victims (60%) cited a door or window being damaged or tampered with as evidence of the most recent attempted break-in.
The Northern Territory (5.8%) had the highest victimisation rate for attempted break-in of all states and territories (NT data was collected in mainly urban areas). Both New South Wales and Western Australia experienced decreases in rates of attempted break-in from 2008-09 compared with 2009-10 (3.2% to 2.0% in New South Wales and 4.8% to 3.9% in Western Australia). Victimisation rates for this type of crime in the other regions remained stable over this period.
