A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the second newsletter for the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) for 2009. The last six months has seen a substantial amount of survey activity. The survey of Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure Activities was conducted in April and was a repeat of a similar survey conducted in 2000, 2003 and 2006. Survey output will be available in late October 2009. Two other surveys, Participation in Sport and Physical Recreation and Attendance at Sporting Events and Selected Cultural Venues, have just gone into the field as part of the 2009-10 Multi-Purpose Household Survey. Results from both of these surveys will be available in late 2010.

NCCRS has also been involved with the development of a new survey - Adult Participation in Selected Cultural Activities. This survey was due to go into the field earlier this year, however, a decision to use a personal interview methodology means that the information will now be collected in the 2010-11 year with results being available in late 2011.

Results from the survey of Cultural Funding by Government for 2007-08 were released in late August. Users should be aware that this survey was redeveloped for the 2007-08 reference period with changes to the methodology, scope and coverage of the collection. For example, data was collected directly from in-scope government departments using an electronic form. Previously much of this information was gleaned from administrative by-product data. These changes mean that the 2007-08 results are not comparable with data for previous years.

The next few months will see quite a few publications being released. Our flagship publications, the sports compendium (Sports and Physical Recreation: A Statistical Overview, Australia (cat. no. 4156.0)) and the arts and culture compendium (Arts and Culture in Australia: A Statistical Overview, Australia (cat. no. 4172.0)) will both be released in late October. In November, the third edition of Perspectives on Sport (cat. no. 4156.0.55.001) will be released with articles on children's participation in organised sport, migrants in sport and participation in sport by people with a disability. The release of the Time Use on Recreation and Leisure Activities (cat. no. 4173.0) report which presents selected results from the 2006 Time Use Survey on how people choose to spend their time will occur toward the end of the year.

As always, I hope you find this newsletter informative. If you have any comments about any aspects of the program please feel free to contact us.
