WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Second fastest household growth

The number of households in Western Australia is projected to increase from 776,300 in 2006 to 1.3 million in 2031, an increase of between 66% and 71%, making it the second fastest growing state in terms of households, behind only Queensland. This is a reflection of the high population growth projected for Western Australia (57%) between 2006 and 2031. The growth in the number of Western Australian households is projected to contribute 14% to the growth in households nationwide, adding between 551,900 and 548,300 households and making Western Australia the fourth largest contributor behind New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

The fast household growth in Western Australia is partly attributable to fast growth in lone person households. These are projected to increase by between 84% and 123% (considerably higher than the growth projected for Australia of between 63% and 91%), or 156,900 to 229,600 households. This is an increase from 186,600 households in 2006 to between 343,500 and 416,100 in 2031. The number of female lone person households is projected to increase from 96,700 in 2006 to between 191,900 and 207,600 in 2031, representing an increase of between 98% and 115%, while the number of male lone person households is projected to increase from 89,800 to between 151,600 and 208,500, representing an increase of between 69% and 132%.

Fast growth in number of couple families without children

The number of families in Western Australia is projected to increase by between 56% and 61% over the projection period, from 572,600 in 2006 to between 895,500 and 920,300 families in 2031. This growth is faster than that projected for Australia (of between 40% and 43%).

Couple families without children are projected to increase the fastest of all family types in Western Australia, by between 77% and 98%, to reach between 333,600 and 434,000 families in 2031, from 219,400 in 2006. As a result, in all three series couple families without children are projected to outnumber couple families with children during the projection period, from either 2012 (Series II and Series III) or 2026 (Series I) onwards.

The number of one-parent families in Western Australia is projected to increase from 87,200 in 2006 to between 137,000 and 168,200 in 2031, representing an increase of between 57% and 93%. Female one-parent families accounted for around four-fifths (83%) of all one-parent families in 2006; this proportion is projected to remain at a similar level in 2031, at around 82% to 83%.
