ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION RELEASE CHANGES

Merging of age-sex population estimates into Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0)

From 2010, the ABS revises net overseas migration (NOM) and estimated resident population (ERP) twice a year and publishes them in the March and September quarter issues of Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0). The ABS also releases 30 June ERP by age and sex in Population by Age and Sex, Australian States and Territories (cat. no. 3201.0) in December each year; these ERPs are subsequently revised and published in March and September in 3101.0. This greatly reduces the usefulness of data published annually in 3201.0.

As was previously advised in the Demography News, Aug 2010 (cat. no. 3106.0) released on 17 August 2010, from March quarter 2010 (released in September 2010), Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) included ERP broken down by age and sex, and other associated data which has previously been published in Population by Age and Sex, Australian States and Territories (cat. no. 3201.0). The inclusion of age-sex data in this publication will ensure consistency between ERP totals and the relevant age-sex breakdown at all times, particularly following ERP revisions.

The production of Population by Age and Sex, Australian States and Territories (cat. no. 3201.0) will cease following the release of June quarter 2010 data (scheduled for release in December 2010).
