AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Slower household growth

Over the projection period, the number of households in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is projected to increase, from 126,500 in 2006 to between 174,800 and 178,400 in 2031. This is an increase of between 38% and 41%, slower than household growth for Australia (between 47% and 52%). This reflects the lower population growth projected for the ACT (30%) than for Australia (39%) over the same period.

As in all other states and territories, lone person households in the ACT are projected to increase most rapidly of all household types, increasing by between 56% and 88%, from 29,400 in 2006 to between 45,900 and 55,400 in 2031. Female lone person households are projected to remain the most common lone person household during the projection period, increasing from 16,600 people in 2006 to between 27,800 and 30,900 by 2031. The number of male lone person households is projected to increase from 12,800 in 2006 to between 18,100 and 24,400 people in 2031.

Average household size

Average household size in the ACT is projected to decline from 2.6 people per household in 2006 to 2.4 in 2031, similar to the average household size projected for Australia.

Slow growth in number of families

The number of families in the ACT is projected to increase by between 28% and 34% over the projection period, from 91,700 in 2006 to between 117,500 and 122,700 in 2031. This growth is slower than for Australia overall, where families are projected to increase by between 40% and 43% over the same period.

Couple families without children are projected to increase the most rapidly of all family types in the ACT, increasing by between 48% and 75%, from 33,400 in 2006 to between 49,300 and 58,500 in 2031. As a result, couple families without children are projected to become the most common family type in the ACT in two of the three projection series, outnumbering couple families with children in either 2014 (Series II) or 2013 (Series III), the same years as for Australia overall.

In 2006, couple families with children were the most common family type in the ACT, with 42,600 families accounting for 46% of all families. Growth in this family type is projected to occur in only two of the three projection series. In Series I and II, the number of couple families with children is projected to increase by 24% and 10% respectively to reach 52,800 and 46,700 families, while in Series III the number is projected to decline by 14% to 36,600 families. As a proportion, couple families with children are projected to decrease to between 43% (Series I) and 31% (Series III) of all families in the ACT by 2031.

One-parent families in the ACT are projected to increase at a faster rate than two-parent families, from 14,100 in 2006 to between 18,700 and 20,000 in 2031, an increase of between 32% and 42%. This is a slower increase than that projected for Australia over the same period (40% to 77%).
