At 30 June 2002, the Victorian milk cattle herd stood at 1.9 million, with the highest concentrations in Goulburn and Western District Statistical Divisions.

In 2001-02, most milk cattle in Victoria were found in Goulburn Statistical Division (528,300). This was followed by Western District Statistical Division with 474,300 and Gippsland Statistical Division with 373,800.
