Production of sugar cane is a major component of Queensland agriculture and is carried out in most of the river flats in the fertile coastal valleys. Cultivation is intensive and irrigation is used wherever practicable, as in the Burdekin and Bundaberg areas. Harvesting in most districts begins about June and ends in November or December.

The 2004-05 agricultural commodity survey reported a production of 35 million tonnes of sugar cane from 411,000 hectares, resulting in an average yield of 85.9 tonnes a hectare for the season.

In 2004-05, 39% of all sugar cane cut for crushing produced in Queensland came from the Northern Statistical Division (13.8 million tonnes).
