  • In trend terms, the number of building approvals increased in August 2009 for the seventh consecutive month. The trend data shows a dramatic fall in the number of approvals in the year to January 2009, after which the monthly figure steadily increased.
  • The increase was driven by approvals for single houses, which accounted for more than 90% of residential building approvals in August 2009.

  • Historically, private sector housing approvals have made up a large proportion of total building approvals. Strong growth in this area has been a key driver of recent increases in building approvals. In August 2009, private sector housing accounted for 84% of all residential building approvals in seasonally adjusted terms.
