During the last century, there has been a decline in the rates of infant mortality for both Tasmania, and Australia as a whole. In 1902, the infant mortality rate in Tasmania was 79.1 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to 6.2 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2002. The Tasmanian figure for 1902 was markedly lower than that recorded for Australia as a whole (107.1 deaths per 1,000 live births). The Tasmanian figure in 2002 was also slightly higher than that recorded for Australia as a whole (5.0 deaths per 1,000 live births).
