  • The state's quarterly increase was similar to the national increase (0.6%). Of the states, only New South Wales (0.7%) and Tasmania (0.6%) had larger increases.
  • Through the year to June 2009, Western Australia's WPI grew 4.6%, compared with 3.7% nationally. The state's annual increase has been higher than the national annual increase since 2005.

  • Across all industries, Government administration and defence showed the largest increase (1.8% for the quarter and 7.2% for the year). This reflected a change in the timing of pay rises for state government employees working under the Public Sector Service Agreement. In the six months to June, employees with this agreement received two pay increases.
  • Retail trade had the smallest increase in the year to June 2009 (3.2%), closely followed by Mining; and Transport and storage (both 3.3%). This represents the smallest annual increase for Mining since June 2004.
