LABOUR COSTS

During 2011-12, total labour costs to the Australian Mining industry was $27.0b of which Wages and salaries accounted for 87.3% (or $23.6b) of the total.

The largest contributors to wages and salaries were Coal mining with 26.3% (or $6.2b), Exploration and other mining support services with 21.0% (or $5.0b) and Iron ore mining with 15.3% (or $3.6b).

For the same period, the estimate of wages and salaries per employee was $122,000.

It should be noted that employment is measured at a point in time, i.e. end of June, whereas wages and salaries relate to a twelve month period. In times of significant change in the performance of an industry, as is the case in Mining in 2011-12, changes in wages and salaries may not be as great as changes in employment. This will be exacerbated by the effect of those businesses that report on a December year end. Their employment will be reported as at June 2012, whereas wages and salaries will be in respect of the twelve months ended December 2011 (refer to paragraphs 4 and 5 of the Explanatory Notes).
