Rise for new motor vehicle sales during October continues trend: ABS

The trend estimate for total new motor vehicle sales rose by 0.4% in October compared with September 2002. This is the fifth consecutive month in which the trend estimate has risen. A rise of 0.4% was recorded for passenger vehicle sales and a rise of 0.6% was recorded for other vehicle sales.

Queensland recorded the largest rise for the trend estimate of total new motor vehicle sales in October compared with September 2002 (18%) whereas the Northern Territory recorded the greatest fall (6.2%). Tasmania recorded the largest rise in the trend estimate for other vehicles sold (25.3%) but also recorded the largest fall of any state for passenger vehicles (13.7%).

The seasonally adjusted estimate of total new motor vehicle sales fell by 0.5% in October compared with September 2002. A small increase was recorded for passenger vehicle sales (0.3%) whereas a fall in other vehicle sales was recorded (1.8%).
