APRIL KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: The April 2013 trend estimate (94 470) has decreased by 0.4% when compared with March 2013.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The April 2013 seasonally adjusted estimate (93 423) has decreased by 1.6% when compared with March 2013.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for April 2013 with March 2013, sales of Sports utility vehicles increased by 1.0%. Over the same period, Passenger vehicles and Other vehicles decreased by 0.7% and 1.5% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for April 2013 with March 2013, sales of Passenger, Sports utility and Other vehicles decreased by 1.3%, 0.6% and 3.8% respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend estimates: Six of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease for new motor vehicle sales when comparing April 2013 with March 2013. Queensland recorded the largest percentage decrease (1.0%), followed by Western Australia (0.9%) and the Australian Capital Territory (0.8%). Over the same period, sales in Tasmania and Victoria increased by 0.4% and 0.2% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: Six of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in new motor vehicle sales when comparing April 2013 with March 2013. Tasmania recorded the largest percentage decrease (9.3%), followed by Queensland (7.7%) and the Australian Capital Territory (6.4%). Over the same period, Victoria and South Australia increased by 3.7% and 2.5% respectively.

DATA NOTES

The flooding which occurred in Thailand in from June 2011 may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. The impacts from the flooding is no longer affecting the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand.
