TECHNICAL NOTE Counts of Passenger Vehicles by Make

INTRODUCTION

1 Significant improvements continued to be made during the 2014 MVC to the translation of Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) makes and models.

ISSUE

2 MVRs use different means of coding vehicle makes and models. The ABS uses a system to translate these to consistent make and model identifiers. This translation has been significantly improved since the 2012 MVC, in particular for vehicles which had previously been translated as "Unknown Models" of their respective make. Improvements have also been made to the quality of the model information. This was achieved by streamlining the available ABS model designations from those records that had a descriptive model name (eg 'VE Calais' or 'Falcon EB') to a basic description (eg 'Commodore' or 'Falcon').

IMPACT

3 The majority of impacts have been at the model level. There has been minimal impact on counts for makes.

4 The remediation of the ABS model designations has made the extraction of model data simpler and more efficient.
