ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents a statistical overview of sports and physical recreation in Australia, using the latest data available from a diverse range of ABS collections.

Wherever possible, the information contained in this publication has been presented in accordance with the Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications. These include separate classifications for industry, products and occupation. For details refer to Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications, 2001 (cat. no. 4902.0).

This edition of the publication is the fourth update since its release in an on-line version on 29 March 2006, and follows the previous update (2007 Edition 1) on 20 August 2007. The changes in this edition (2008 Edition 1) are

  • chapter 3 contains new data participation in sports and physical recreation by adults and participation in organised sport by children aged 5-14 years. The section on trends in sports and physical activity recreation has also been deleted because of the age of the data and it not being possible to make a valid comparison of the data over time
  • chapter 5 contains new data on attendance at sports events
  • chapter 10 contains new data on sports industries relating to the economic activity of sport businesses. Data on toy and sporting goods wholesalers and on sport, camping and marine equipment retailers has also been deleted.

All other data appearing in 2008 Edition 1 is the same as for 2007 Edition 1.

The next update of this publication will be significant with data to be included from the 2006 Population Census, the 2006 Time Use Survey and more recent data relating to employment and volunteers, products and industries.

Only a selection of the available data about sports and physical recreation has been included in this publication. For information about other relevant data, contact the NCCRS in the Adelaide Office of the ABS.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publication was produced by the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) and made possible with funding assistance from the Sport and Recreation Ministers Council (SRMC) and the Standing Committee on Recreation and Sport (SCORS).

ABS publications draw extensively on information provided freely by individuals, businesses, governments and other organisations. Their continued cooperation is very much appreciated: without it, the wide range of statistics published by the ABS would not be available. Information received by the ABS is treated in strict confidence as required by the Census and Statistics Act 1905.

ROUNDING

Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sum of component items and the published total.
