  • The total number of dwelling units commenced fell 12.6% in the December quarter 2008, to 33,578.
  • New private sector house commencements fell 7.2%, to 23,464. Commencements fell in all states and territories other than Western Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.
  • New private sector other residential building fell 21.6%, to 9,204. This follows a revised rise of 0.4%, to 11,738 in the September quarter.
  • The total number of public sector dwellings commenced fell 37.0%, to 721. Commencements rose in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.
