Over $15 billion income for Australia's clubs and pubs: ABS

The combined total income for Australia's pubs, taverns, bars and hospitality clubs was $15,304 million in 2000-01 according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Pubs, taverns and bars contributed to over half of this combined income ($9,007 million).

Pubs, taverns and bars industry

Just under two-thirds (63%) of the pubs, tavern and bar industry's total income ($9,007 million) was gained from the sale of liquor and other beverages ($5,682 million). Gambling contributed to just under a quarter (24%) or $2,121 million of total income. In 1997-98, the contribution of these items was 71% and 16% respectively.

Other findings for the pubs taverns and bars industry were:
  • just over half (52%) of the income from the sale of liquor and other beverages was for consumption on the premises.
  • The total expenses of businesses in the industry was $8,344 million, of which the main items of expenditure were purchases of liquor and other beverages of $3,270 million, labour costs of $1,776 million and gambling taxes of $590 million.
  • The operating profit margin for the industry was 7.9%.
  • At the end of June 2001, there were 4,627 pubs, taverns and bars premises in Australia, operating 55,662 poker/gaming machines in the premises and employing in excess of 84,000 people.

Hospitality clubs industry

Total income for the hospitality clubs industry in 2000-01 was $6,297 million. This included $3,835 million from gambling, $1,407 million from the sale of liquor and other beverages, and $547 million from meals and food sales.

Gambling income and takings from sale of meals and foods increased by 24% and 16% respectively since 1997-98, however income from sale of liquor and other beverages decreased by 6% over the same period.

The total expenses of the industry were $5,925 million in 2000-01. Major expense items were labour costs of $1,777 million and poker/gaming machine and other gambling taxes and levies of $771 million.

Other main findings for the hospitality clubs industry at the end of June 2001 were:
  • There were 2,911 organisations in the industry operating hospitality clubs at 3,121 premises in Australia and employing nearly 65,000 people.
  • There were 2,057 clubs with gambling facilities, operating 112,127 poker machines.
  • Total membership of hospitality clubs was 6.4 million.
