Also included in this issue is a discussion on a development around tourism statistics, namely a commitment to annual reporting of some new economic indicators of tourism. One of these new measures is presented and explained in this newsletter and should be of interest to those seeking a high level overview of economic performance in tourism over the last decade or so.
I wish to touch on the recent significant revisions to the headline employment figures published in the Australian National Accounts - Tourism Satellite Account 2005-06 (ABS cat no. 5249.0). The ABS is aware that the revisions in this report have caused difficulties for clients and stakeholders of tourism statistics. While the ABS is required to revise and update figures in the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), we hope through publishing this newsletter twice a year to better inform users about our tourism statistics, and in particular, provide plenty of notice of future revisions. To assist with this, we have provided a schedule at the back of this newsletter summarising the publication of the TSA relative to the probable revisions ABS see as being necessary in the future. This schedule will be updated as required and will be included in both the March and September editions of the newsletter each year. We will also be releasing a short issues paper about TSA designed to answer some of the more common questions posed by users.
More generally, we hope this newsletter will provide a useful insight into the work of the ABS and provide a way for clients and stakeholders to connect with work of the ABS. As such, we would appreciate any feedback you would like to provide regarding the usefulness of the information presented.
