The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to September 2019.

In current prices, the trend estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.2% in September 2019. This follows a rise of 0.2% in August 2019 and a rise of 0.2% in July 2019.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.2% in September 2019. This follows a rise of 0.4% in August 2019 and a relatively unchanged result (0.0%) in July 2019.

The original estimate for Australian turnover fell 1.9% in September 2019. The original estimate for chains and other larger retailers fell 2.1% in September 2019. The original estimate for smaller retailers fell 1.6% in September 2019.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the September quarter 2019 fell 0.1%. This follows a 0.1% rise in the June quarter 2019, and a 0.1% fall in the March quarter 2019.

In the September quarter 2019 the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms for Cafes, restaurants and takeaway services (-1.0%), and Department Stores (-0.1%). Food retailing (0.0%) was relatively unchanged. Household goods retailing (0.9%), Other retailing (0.3%), and Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.3%) rose in seasonally adjusted terms in the September quarter 2019.

The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian turnover rose 0.6% in seasonally adjusted terms in the September quarter 2019.


TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE

The following states and territories rose in trend terms in September 2019: Western Australia (0.5%), New South Wales (0.1%), Victoria (0.1%), Queensland (0.1%), Tasmania (0.4%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.4%), and South Australia (0.1%). The Northern Territory (0.0%) was relatively unchanged in trend terms in September 2019.

The following states and territories rose in seasonally adjusted terms in September 2019: New South Wales (0.3%), Western Australia (0.7%), Tasmania (1.0%), South Australia (0.2%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.1%), and the Northern Territory (0.1%). Victoria (0.0%) was relatively unchanged. Queensland (-0.1%) fell in trend terms in September 2019.

In the September quarter 2019, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms in the following states and territories: South Australia (-0.9%), New South Wales (-0.2%), Queensland (-0.2%), Victoria (-0.1%), and the Northern Territory (-0.5%). Western Australia (1.0%), Tasmania (0.8%) and the Australian Capital Territory (0.3%) rose in seasonally adjusted volume terms in the September quarter 2019.
