The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to September 2016.

In current prices, the trend estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.2% in September 2016 following a rise of 0.3% in August 2016 and a rise of 0.2% in July 2016.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.6% in September 2016 following a rise of 0.5% in August 2016 and a relatively unchanged estimate (0.0%) in July 2016.

The original estimate for Australian turnover rose 1.9% in September 2016. The original estimate for chains and other larger retailers rose 2.2% in September 2016. The original estimate for smaller retailers rose 1.4% in September 2016.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the September quarter 2016 fell 0.1% following a rise of 0.3% in the June quarter 2016 and a rise of 0.7% in the March quarter 2016.

In the September quarter 2016, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms for Food retailing (-0.7%), Department stores (-3.6%) and Other retailing (-0.9%). Household goods retailing (0.0%) was relatively unchanged. Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (2.5%) and Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.1%) rose in the September quarter 2016.

The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian turnover rose 0.7% in seasonally adjusted terms in the September quarter 2016.


TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE

The following states and territories rose in trend terms in September 2016: Queensland (0.6%), New South Wales (0.2%), Victoria (0.2%), South Australia (0.3%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.4%) and Tasmania (0.1%). Western Australia (-0.1%) and the Northern Territory (-0.1%) fell in trend terms in September 2016.

The following states and territories rose in seasonally adjusted terms in September 2016: New South Wales (0.8%), Victoria (0.6%), Queensland (0.5%), Western Australia (0.5%), South Australia (0.3%), the Northern Territory (1.2%), Tasmania (0.4%) and the Australian Capital Territory (0.3%).

In the September quarter 2016, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms in the following states: Victoria (-0.6%), New South Wales (-0.3%), Western Australia (-0.4%), the Northern Territory (-1.4%) and Tasmania (-0.1%). Queensland (1.2%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.6%) and South Australia (0.1%) rose in volume terms in the September quarter 2016.
