INDUSTRY TRENDS


MONTHLY SEASONALLY ADJUSTED AND TREND ESTIMATES


TOTAL RETAIL

There has been moderate trend growth for 14 months. Food retailing, the major contributor, has also had 14 months of moderate growth. Household good retailing had moderate growth in January 2007 following nine months of strong trend growth. Department stores has had two months of moderate trend growth. Recreational good retailing has had six months of strong growth.

FOOD RETAILING

There has been moderate trend growth since December 2005. Victoria (nine months), Queensland (four months), South Australia (two months) and Western Australia (one month) have had moderate growth. New South Wales had weak trend growth in January 2007 following six months of moderate growth. Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory also had weak trend growth in January.

DEPARTMENT STORES

There has been moderate trend growth in the last two months. Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia have had three months of moderate trend growth. New South Wales has had weak or flat trend growth in these last three months and the Australian Capital Territory had strong growth in January 2007.

CLOTHING AND SOFT GOOD RETAILING

Growth has been slowing since August 2006 and the trend was in decline in January 2007. Most states and territories were in decline or flat in January 2007. Exceptions were Victoria (moderate growth), the Northern Territory (strong growth) and the Australian Capital Territory (strong growth).

HOUSEHOLD GOOD RETAILING

There was moderate trend growth in January 2007 following nine months of strong growth. New South Wales (three months), Queensland (nine months) and the Northern Territory (one month) have had strong trend growth. Victoria had moderate trend growth in January following two months of strong growth.

RECREATIONAL GOOD RETAILING

The trend growth has been strong for the last six months. Victoria (four months), Western Australia (six months), Northern Territory (five months) and the Australian Capital Territory (five months) have all had strong growth. New South Wales has had six months of moderate trend growth, while Queensland had moderate trend growth in January following six months of strong growth.

OTHER RETAILING

Other retailing has had five months of decline in the trend growth. New South Wales (five months), Queensland (seven months), and the Australian Capital Territory (seven months) have been in decline. Victoria's trend was flat in January 2007 following five months of decline. By contrast, Western Australia has had 14 months of strong trend growth.

TOTAL RETAIL (EXCLUDING HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES)

Over the last seven months, the trend growth for Total retail (excluding Hospitality and services) has been slightly stronger than Total industries (including Hospitality and services).

HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES

January 2007 and December 2006 were flat following seven months of weak trend growth. New South Wales has had a flat trend for the last three months. Western Australia has had 13 months of strong trend growth. Victoria had moderate trend growth for the last three months, while the Australian Capital Territory had moderate growth in January following 13 months of strong growth. The other states have been in decline for at least three months.
