NOTES

INTRODUCTION

This release presents counts of Australian businesses and is sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Business Register (ABSBR).

This is the ninth update to Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits (cat no 8165.0), initially released in February 2007.

This series replaces all previous business counts releases, which can be found under the 'Past and Future Releases' tab.

CHANGES FROM THE PREVIOUS RELEASE

Addition of Local Government Area (LGA) data cubes
The 2013-17 CABEE publication includes Local Government Area (LGA) data for the first time (data cubes 10 and 11). Both data cubes 10 and 11 present counts of businesses by industry division by LGA; data cube 10 contains this data by Employment Size Ranges and data cube 11 is by Turnover Size Ranges.

Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) changes
Changes to the The Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) classification in 2016 were first used in 2012-16 CABEE (see Explanatory Notes). This classification is used again in 2013-17 CABEE. This release uses the latest May 2017 ASGS index. The May 2017 index included a new LGA code named Bayside (10500), which is a merger of Rockdale (16650) and Botany Bay (11100).

Additional Annual Turnover Size Ranges
The $2m or more turnover size range has been replaced with the following size ranges: $2m to less than $5m; $5m to less than $10m; and $10m or more.

Addition of Sub-totals
To improve the usability of CABEE data, sub-totals have been added to all data cubes (excluding data cube 1 where sub-totals already existed).
