INTRODUCTION

This publication presents information from the 2014-15 Business Characteristics Survey (BCS). The BCS is conducted annually and collects detailed information relating to: use of information technology (IT); innovation; and a broad range of other non-financial characteristics.

The data presented in this publication includes key measures of innovation by type and status, as well as business practices related to innovation including: barriers; drivers; sources of ideas and information; collaboration; intellectual property protection methods; novelty; financial indicators; and benefits.

STRUCTURE OF THIS RELEASE

There are two components to this release: web based information; and data cubes. The data cubes contain detailed data that underpin the tables, graphs and commentary included in the web based information.

FUTURE RELEASE FROM THE 2014-15 BCS

More detailed and final estimates from the BCS will be released in Selected Characteristics of Australian Business (cat. no. 8167.0) on 18 August 2016. Some of these data will be cross-classified by innovation status, providing a rich picture of differences in characteristics of innovation-active and non innovation-active businesses.

DATA QUALITY

Information about data quality is provided in the Quality Declaration and Explanatory Notes and must be taken into consideration when interpreting the statistics in this release.
