ANALYSIS BY INDUSTRY FEATURED SERIES The following graphs and commentary refer to income, expenses, operating profit before tax (OPBT), earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) and industry value added (IVA) in nominal terms during the relevant financial year(s), and to employment at end June. INDUSTRY RANKING Employment Retail trade remained the highest employer in Total selected industries in 2013-14, as it was in 2006-07. Manufacturing, which in 2006-07 was the second highest employing industry, was seventh in 2013-14. The top five employers in 2013-14 were:

Total expenses rose by 4.6% and wages and salaries rose by 6%. Employment increased by 2%. OPBT rose by 6.5%, while EBITDA was flat at 0.1% and IVA rose by 2.2%. Division B Mining Sales and service income grew by 7% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, although total income grew by only 2.9% over the same period. Total expenses and wages and salaries rose by 5.3% and 2.8% respectively, while employment fell by 2.1%. OPBT fell by 6.3%, while EBITDA and IVA both rose, by 12.3% and 10.6% respectively. Division C Manufacturing Sales and service income and total income fell by 0.5% and 0.4% respectively between 2012-13 and 2013-14. Wages and salaries declined by 0.2%, total expenses fell by 1% and employment fell by 1.9%. OPBT, EBITDA and IVA rose by 10.2%, 1.1% and 0.2% respectively. Division D Electricity, gas, water and waste services Sales and service income rose by 3.5% between 2012-13 and 2013-14 while total income grew by 5.5% over the same period. Wages and salaries rose by 2.3%, but employment fell by 1.7%. Total expenses increased by 4.8%. OPBT also increased by 12.8%, while EBITDA and IVA increased by 3.5% and 3.3% respectively. Division E Construction Sales and service income grew by 6.9% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, while total income grew by 8%. Wages and salaries grew by 6.5% and employment grew by 2.2%. Total expenses grew by 6.4%. OPBT rose by 27.6%, while EBITDA and IVA grew by 5.8% and 6.5% respectively. Division F Wholesale trade Sales and service income grew by 0.8% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, while total income grew by 1%. Wages and salaries grew by 0.1% and employment grew by 0.4%. Total expenses grew by 0.9%. OPBT and EBITDA rose by 8% and 10.7% respectively, while IVA grew by 3.3%. Division G Retail trade Sales and service income and total income both grew by 0.9% between 2012-13 and 2013-14. Wages and salaries fell by 1.1% over the same period, and employment fell by 3.8%. Total expenses rose by 0.7%. OPBT, EBITDA and IVA grew by 4.5%, 1.2% and 1.2% respectively. Division H Accommodation and food services Sales and service income rose by 4% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, while total income rose by 4.6%. Wages and salaries rose by 5.8% over the same period, and total expenses rose by 5.3%. Employment fell 1.4%. OPBT and EBITDA declined by 1.2% and 9% respectively, while IVA increased slightly at 0.7%. Division I Transport, postal and warehousing Sales and service income rose by 1.8% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, while total income grew by 3.5%. Employment grew by 0.5% and wages and salaries grew by 1.1%. Total expenses rose by 2.2%. OPBT, EBITDA and IVA grew by 16.5%, 0.2% and 1.2% respectively. Division J Information media and telecommunications Sales and service income declined by 0.2% between 2012-13 and 2013-14. Total income was flat at 0.2%. Employment fell by 2.4%, with wages and salaries increasing by 0.8%. Total expenses fell by 0.4%. OPBT declined by 0.9%. EBITDA and IVA both rose, by 1.8% and 1.2% respectively. Employment rose by 0.8% and wages and salaries increased by 8.2% over the same period. Total expenses rose by 4.5%. OPBT, EBITDA and IVA rose by 13.4%, 6.7% and 6.9% respectively. Division M Professional, scientific and technical services Between 2012-13 and 2013-14, sales and service income rose by 3.6%, while total income grew 7.8% over the same period. Employment rose 0.6%, but wages and salaries increased by 4% and total expenses increased by 9.2%. OPBT grew by 1.3%, while EBITDA and IVA both declined, by 21.9% and 1.1% respectively. Division N Administrative and support services Sales and service income rose by 1.5% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, while total income grew by 3.3%. Employment grew by 1.9%, but wages and salaries rose by 8%. Total expenses increased by 4.1%. OPBT declined by 6.5% over the same period, along with EBITDA, which fell by 20.1%. IVA rose by 4.2%. Division O Public administration and safety (private) Between 2012-13 and 2013-14 sales and service income and total income grew by 4.3% and 4.2% respectively. Employment fell by 4.7%, while wages and salaries rose by 4.9%. Total expenses rose by 6.5%. OPBT and EBITDA fell by 13.1% and 10.1% respectively, while IVA grew by 2.5%. Division P Education and training (private) Between 2012-13 and 2013-14, sales and service income and total income grew by 6% and 7% respectively. Employment grew by 5.3% and wages and salaries rose by 6.6%. Total expenses rose by 6.6%. OPBT, EBITDA and IVA grew by 11.3%, 24.9% and 8.9% respectively. Division Q Health care and social assistance (private) Sales and service income declined by 2.5% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, while total income rose by 2.7% over the same period. Employment rose by 3.1%, while wages and salaries increased by 7.7%. Total expenses grew by 5.2%. OPBT and EBITDA fell, by 7.8% and 10.3% respectively. IVA rose by 2.3%. Division R Arts and recreation services Sales and service income rose by 4.8% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, while total income rose by 5.4%. Employment and wages and salaries rose by 9% and 11.5% respectively, while total expenses rose by 5.7%. OPBT and IVA grew by 3.3% and 4.2% respectively, while EBITDA fell by 8%. Division S Other services Between 2012-13 and 2013-14, sales and service income grew by 6% and total income grew by 6.4%. Employment grew by 11.4%, while wages and salaries rose by 5.7%.
