In 2003-04, there was an average of 5,100 unemployed people in the Northern Region. Of these, 3,000 were males (58.8% of people unemployed) and 2,100 were females (41.2% of people unemployed).
From 2002-03 to 2003-04, the number of people unemployed in the Region decreased by an estimated 500 people, however from 1999-2000 to 2003-04 the number of people unemployed had increased by 600, or 13.3%.
Some 86.3% of people unemployed in the Northern Region in 2003-04 were looking for full-time work. Some 90.0% of unemployed males and 76.2% of unemployed females were looking for full-time work.
