AGRICULTURAL CENSUS - PROGRESS REPORT

You will have seen in previous issues of Ag Mag that ABS is conducting its five-yearly Agricultural Census at the moment. The Census forms were sent out in June, to about 163,000 agricultural businesses in Australia and many completed forms have been sent back and are being processed, compiling the data, ready for analysis.

As at the time of this Ag Mag issue being prepared for publication, we had received responses for 121,429 (76%) of the total forms sent out. Of that number,107,277 were completed using the paper form and the remaining 14,152 came in electronically via the e-form on the internet. This is the first time that ABS has used the e-form for one of its Agricultural Censuses and the take-up has been encouraging, although we would have liked more to have used the facility.

If you haven't yet sent back your Census form ... it's not too late ... in fact, the sooner you return it, the better... and if you can do it online, even better still. The information you got in the mail with your Census form will tell you how to get online to complete the e-form.

So, have a look around home for the form ... check the top of the 'fridge, the kitchen drawers, under that pile of accounts on your office desk or down behind the separator in the dairy ...wherever it might have been put for "safe keeping" ... dust off the form and spend a few minutes completing it and then send it off to us at ABS. Your contribution is important to the final result.

We have already sent out some reminders for outstanding forms ... we don't really want to get our guys with no neck, in black suits and sunglasses** to pay you a visit to retrieve your form do we? Seriously though, the ABS really appreciates the assistance and responses we get from the Australian agricultural community and as mentioned before, you can be assured that your information is dealt with in a highly confidential manner and is stored securely.

You can look forward to seeing the first results of the Census published around November of this year.

The ABS doesn't really have guys in black suits and sunglasses who come calling ... they have grey suits!
