RESULTS BY HOUSEHOLD TYPE

There are conceptual differences in the way that the housing and financial and insurance services groups are treated in the ALCI and CPI. See the Explanatory Notes for further detail.

Employee households

The index for employee households rose 1.2% for the September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in mortgage interest charges, tobacco, electricity and water and sewerage. The major offsetting decreases were provided by automotive fuel, vegetables, pharmaceuticals and audio, visual and computing equipment.

The ALCI for employee households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.7%) for the September quarter 2010. Employee households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on financial and insurance services than the wider CPI population group (which comprises total metropolitan households). The mortgage interest charges paid by employee households recorded a significant increase for the quarter and for conceptual reasons this item is not included in the CPI.

The index for employee households rose 4.6% for the year to September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in mortgage interest charges, tobacco, electricity, rents and hospital and medical services. The major offsetting decreases were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, women's outerwear and motor vehicles.

The ALCI for employee households showed a larger increase compared to the CPI (+2.8%) for the year to September quarter 2010. Mortgage interest charges recorded a significant increase for the year to September quarter 2010 and for conceptual reasons, this item is not included in the CPI.

Age pensioner households

The index for age pensioner households rose 0.9% for the September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, property rates and charges, electricity, water and sewerage and insurance. The offsetting decreases were provided by automotive fuel, pharmaceuticals and vegetables.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.7%) for the September quarter 2010. Age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on utilities, which recorded increases for the quarter.

The index for age pensioner households rose 3.1% for the year to September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, electricity, hospital and medical services, insurance and rents. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, major household appliances, women's outerwear and women's footwear.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+2.8%) for the year to September quarter 2010. Compared to the wider CPI population group, age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food and health, both of which increased for the year to September quarter 2010.

Other government transfer recipient households

The index for other government transfer recipient households rose 1.2% for the September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, electricity, interest charges, rents, water and sewerage, property rates and charges and insurance. The major offsetting decreases were provided by automotive fuel, vegetables and pharmaceuticals.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.7%) for the September quarter 2010. The relatively higher expenditure by other government transfer recipient households on alcohol and tobacco contributed to the difference. The rise for tobacco was partially due to the flow-on effect of the 25% increase in excise tax implemented on 30 April 2010 as well as the rise of federal excise on 1 August 2010.

The index for other government transfer recipient households rose 4.4% for the year to September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, interest charges, rents, electricity and insurance. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, children's and infants' clothing, women's outerwear and major household appliances.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+2.8%) for the year to September quarter 2010. Compared to the wider CPI population group, other government transfer recipient households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food and alcohol and tobacco.

Self-funded retiree households

The index for self-funded retiree households rose 0.9% for the September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in electricity, tobacco, water and sewerage, property rates and charges and insurance. The major offsetting decreases were provided by automotive fuel, vegetables and pharmaceuticals.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.7%) for the September quarter 2010. Self-funded retiree households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on utilities which recorded increases for the quarter.

The index for self-funded retiree households rose 2.8% for the year to September quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, hospital and medical services, electricity, insurance, interest charges and water and sewerage. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, major household appliances, women's outerwear and motor vehicles.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed the same increase for the year to September quarter 2010 as the CPI (+2.8%). Self-funded retiree households have a relatively lower proportion of expenditure on housing and a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on alcohol and tobacco.
