RESULTS BY HOUSEHOLD TYPE

There are conceptual differences in the way that the housing and financial and insurance services groups are treated in the ALCI and CPI. See the Explanatory Notes for further detail.

Employee households

The index for employee households increased 1.3% for the June quarter 2010 due to increases in interest charges, tobacco, hospital and medical services, automotive fuel and rents. The major offsetting decreases were provided by domestic holiday travel and accommodation, audio, visual and computing equipment, fruit, vegetables and overseas holiday travel.

The ALCI for employee households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.6%) for the June quarter 2010. Employee households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on financial and insurance services than the wider CPI population group (which comprises total metropolitan households). The interest charges paid by employee households recorded a significant increase for the quarter and for conceptual reasons this item is not included in the CPI.

The index for employee households increased 4.5% for the year to June quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in interest charges, tobacco, automotive fuel, electricity, rents, and hospital and medical services. The major offsetting decreases were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, domestic holiday travel and accommodation, men's outerwear and women's outerwear.

The ALCI for employee households showed a larger increase compared to the CPI (+3.0%) for the year to June quarter 2010. Interest charges recorded a significant increase for the year to June quarter 2010 and for conceptual reasons, this item is not included in the CPI.

Age pensioner households

The index for age pensioner households increased 0.5% for the June quarter 2010 due to increases in tobacco, hospital and medical services, rents, automotive fuel, and interest charges. The offsetting decreases were provided by domestic holiday travel and accommodation, electricity, fruit, vegetables and pharmaceuticals.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a slightly smaller increase than the CPI (+0.6%) for the June quarter 2010. Age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food, which recorded large falls for fruit and vegetables this quarter.

The index for age pensioner households increased 3.3% for the year to June quarter 2010 due to increases in electricity, tobacco, automotive fuel, insurance and hospital and medical services. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, domestic holiday travel and accommodation, men's outerwear and women's outerwear.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+3.0%) for the year to June quarter 2010. Compared to the wider CPI population group, age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on health which increased for the year to June quarter 2010.

Other government transfer recipient households

The index for other government transfer recipient households increased 1.4% for the June quarter 2010 due to increases in tobacco, interest charges, rents, automotive fuel and hospital and medical services. The offsetting decreases were provided by domestic holiday travel and accommodation, electricity, vegetables, fruit, audio, visual and computing equipment and pharmaceuticals.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.6%) for the June quarter 2010. The higher expenditure by other government transfer recipient households on alcohol and tobacco contributed to the difference, driven by the combined effect of the excise tax increase and price rises for tobacco.

The index for other government transfer recipient households increased 4.2% for the year to June quarter 2010 due to increases in tobacco, interest charges, rents, electricity and automotive fuel. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, children's and infants' clothing, women's outerwear and men's outerwear.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+3.0%) for the year to June quarter 2010. Compared to the wider CPI population group, other government transfer recipient households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food and alcohol and tobacco. Tobacco recorded a significant increase for the year to June quarter 2010.

Self-funded retiree households

The index for self-funded retiree households increased 0.5% for the June quarter 2010 due to increases in tobacco, hospital and medical services, automotive fuel, interest charges and furniture. The major offsetting decreases were provided by domestic holiday travel and accommodation, fruit, overseas holiday travel and accommodation, vegetables, audio, visual and computing equipment and pharmaceuticals.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed a smaller increase than the CPI (+0.6%) for the June quarter 2010. The higher proportion of expenditure by self-funded retiree households on recreation contributed to the difference due to strong falls in holiday travel and accommodation this quarter.

The index for self-funded retiree households increased 3.0% for the year to June quarter 2010 due to increases in electricity, tobacco, hospital and medical services, automotive fuel and insurance. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, domestic holiday travel and accommodation, women's outerwear and motor vehicles.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed the same increase for the year to June quarter 2010 as the CPI (+3.0%). Self-funded retiree households have a relatively lower proportion of expenditure on housing, which had a large increase for the year to June quarter 2010. Self-funded retiree households also have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on recreation which recorded a decrease for the year to June quarter 2010.
