STAGE OF PRODUCTION COMMENTARY
STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW
In the September quarter 2011, the final (Stage 3) index rose 0.6%, the intermediate (Stage 2) index rose 0.1% and the preliminary (Stage 1) index rose 0.1%. Through the year to the September quarter 2011, the final (Stage 3) index rose 2.7%, the intermediate (Stage 2) index rose 4.5% and the preliminary (Stage 1) index rose 5.6%.
The rise of 0.6% in the final (Stage 3) index reflected an increase of 0.7% in the prices of domestically produced items with the prices of imported items recording no change. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity, gas and water (+8.2%), commercial fishing (+14.1%) and other agriculture (+3.7%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for building construction (-0.3%). Rises in the import prices for industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (+2.1%) and clothing manufacturing (+6.7%) were offset by falls in the import prices for motor vehicle and part manufacturing (-0.9%).
The rise of 0.1% in the intermediate (Stage 2) index reflected an increase of 0.1% in the prices of domestically produced items, partly offset by a fall of 0.3% in the prices of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity, gas and water (+2.8%), marketing and management services (+2.8%), and legal and accounting services (+2.6%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for grain, sheep, beef and dairy cattle farming (-5.8%) and petroleum refining (-2.9%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-4.4%), petroleum refining (-5.3%) and other chemical product manufacturing (-2.4%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for metal ore mining (+14.3%).
The rise of 0.1% in the preliminary (Stage 1) index reflected an increase of 0.2% in the prices of domestically produced items, partly offset by a fall of 1.0% in the prices of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity, gas and water (+3.4%), coal mining, (+4.1%) and marketing and management services (+2.8%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for grain, sheep, beef and dairy cattle farming (-6.2%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-4.4%), petroleum refining (-4.6%) and other chemical product manufacturing (-2.4%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for paper and paper product manufacturing (+4.9%).
