STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW

In the June quarter 2016, the Final demand index rose 0.1%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.2% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.1%. Through the year to the June quarter 2016, the Final demand index rose 1.0%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.3% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.1%.

The rise of 0.1% in the Final demand index in the June quarter 2016 reflected a rise of 0.3% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 1.6% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+11.7%), Building construction (+0.6%) and Meat and meat product manufacturing (+4.4%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for Other manufacturing (-2.6%), Road and bridge construction (-1.0%) and Commercial fishing (-10.9%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices paid for Computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-3.8%), Specialised machinery and equipment manufacturing (-4.9%) and Clothing manufacturing (-4.4%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices paid for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+18.3%), Motor vehicle and motor vehicle part manufacturing (+0.6%) and Cigarette and tobacco product manufacturing (+3.7%).

The rise of 0.2% in the Intermediate demand index in the June quarter 2016 reflected a rise of 0.4% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 2.2% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for Electricity, gas and water supply and sewerage and drainage services (+2.0%), Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+12.4%) and Employment services (+2.0%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for Grain mill and cereal product manufacturing (-10.3%), Sheep, beef cattle and grain farming (-2.5%) and Rental and hiring services (-1.1%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices paid for Textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (-2.9%), Computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-3.4%) and Motor vehicle and motor vehicle part manufacturing (-4.9%). Party offsetting these falls were rises in the prices paid for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+15.0%), Oil and gas extraction (+18.2%) and Cleaning compound and toiletry preparation manufacturing (+1.6%).

The rise of 0.1% in the Preliminary demand index in the June quarter 2016 reflected a rise of 0.5% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 2.0% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for Electricity, gas and water supply and sewerage and drainage services (+2.2%), Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+13.4%) and Employment services (+2.0%). Offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for Sheep, beef cattle and grain farming (-2.6%), Grain mill and cereal product manufacturing (-13.9%) and Rental and hiring services (-1.2%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices paid for Textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (-2.8%), Computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-3.5%) and Basic ferrous metal product manufacturing (-6.7%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices paid for Oil and gas extraction (+18.3%), Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+14.8%) and Cleaning compound and toiletry preparation manufacturing (+4.4%).
