ALL GROUPS CPI

At the All groups level, the CPI rose in all capital cities during the June quarter 2014.

The housing group was the most significant positive contributor to the All groups quarterly movement. The group recorded rises in seven of the eight capital cities. The largest movement was recorded in Melbourne (+1.3%), driven by increases in new dwelling purchase by owner-occupiers. Adelaide (-1.0%) was the only city to record a fall for the housing group, due to the seasonal switch to off-peak pricing for electricity.

At the eight capital cities level, the health group was the second largest positive contributor to the All groups quarterly movement (+2.9%), showing increases in all cities. The most significant contributor was the increase in medical and hospital services in all capital cities, most notably in Hobart (+3.7%) and Adelaide (+3.4%).

The most significant negative contributor to the All groups quarterly movement was the transport group (-0.7%), recording falls in six capital cities. The largest city movements were recorded by Melbourne (-1.0%) and Adelaide (-0.9%) driven by falls in automotive fuel.

Over the twelve months to the June quarter 2014, the All groups CPI rose in all capital cities with the largest positive movements recorded in Perth (+3.3%) and Darwin (+3.3%). Canberra (+2.2%) recorded the smallest rise over the twelve months to the June quarter 2014.
