ANALYSIS

TREND ESTIMATES

In trend terms the total number of jobs in Australia increased by 76,429 (or 0.5%), made up of 6,111 job vacancies and 70,317 filled jobs.

Filled jobs in Australia grew by 0.5% in the September quarter 2018, following a 0.5% rise in the June quarter 2018. Filled jobs grew 2.4% through the year in trend terms. The number of main jobs grew by 54,384 (an increase of 0.4%) while secondary jobs grew by 15,933 (an increase of 1.7%) in the September quarter 2018.

The total number of employed persons increased by 0.4% to 13.7 million in the September quarter 2018.

The total number of hours actually worked increased by 0.3% to 5.3 billion hours, and the total labour income increased by 1.1% to $246,860 million.

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES

Jobs

Filled jobs in Australia grew by 0.3% in the September quarter 2018, following a 0.6% rise in the June quarter 2018. Filled jobs grew 2.2% through the year in seasonally adjusted terms.

The total number of jobs in Australia increased by 40,560 (or 0.3%), made up of 1,004 job vacancies and 39,556 filled jobs.

The number of main jobs grew by 20,418 (an increase of 0.2%), while secondary jobs grew by 19,138 (an increase of 2.0%) in the September quarter 2018.

Persons

The total number of employed persons increased by 0.1% to 13.7 million in the September quarter 2018.

The proportion of employed persons working more than one job was 6.7% in the September quarter 2010 and 7.0% in the September quarter 2018.

Volumes

The total number of hours actually worked increased by 1.1% to 5.3 billion hours; and the total number of hours paid increased 1.1% to 5.7 billion hours.

Payments

Total labour income increased by 0.7% to $245,993 million.

Total compensation of employees increased by 1.0% to $223,292 million, and labour income from self-employment decreased by 1.9% to $22,701 million.

Over the same period, total labour costs increased by $1,989 million (0.8%) to $261,213 million.

Ratios

Average income per person increased by 0.6% to $17,960 in the September quarter 2018.

Average hours worked per job increased by 0.8% to 377 hours.

Average labour cost per hour paid remained the same at $46.
