MAIN CONDITION IN MOTHER

Perinatal deaths differ from general deaths because a condition may be reported in the record for the fetus/infant, the mother, or for both. A maternal condition was reported in 720 (28.4%) of the 2532 perinatal deaths registered in 2007, and 745 (30.3%) of all 2459 perinatal deaths registered in 2006. Complications of placenta, cord and membranes (P02) was the most frequently reported maternal cause, accounting for 308 or 17.0% of perinatal deaths in 2007, and 316 or 18.4% in 2006. Maternal complications of pregnancy (P01) accounted for 255 or 14.1% of perinatal deaths in 2007, and 253 or 14.8% in 2006.

- nil or rounded to zero (including null cells)
(a) Perinatal deaths are all fetal deaths (at least 20 weeks gestation or at least 400 grams birth weight) plus all neonatal deaths. See Glossary for further information.
(b) 2007 data is preliminary and will be subject to a revision process. See Explanatory Notes 4-5 for further information.
(c) Data cells with small values have been randomly assigned to protect the confidentiality of individuals. As a result, some totals will not equal the sum of their components. It is important to note that cells with a zero value have not been affected by confidentialisation.
(d) Perinatal deaths for 2006 have been subject to a revision of scope rules. See Explanatory Notes 18-20.
(e) Includes sex indeterminate
(f) Includes "not stated" condition in mother.
