SELECTED ABS RELEASES
Since the last edition of Age Matters in January 2007, the ABS have released the following Census products.
CDATA Newsletter (cat. no. 2066.0)
| The 'CDATA Newspoint Newsletter' aims to provide Census data users with an effective means of notifying users of the implications of certain Census development issues and arising data issues. It also aims to assist with notifying users of the release dates of Census data (released over several stages) and the content of these releases, by facilitating a two-way communication process between ABS and Census users. In effect, this will enable information exchange between users (ie. for meeting corporate objectives of informed/increased use of statistics). |
Census Update (Newsletter), Mar 2007 (cat. no. 2902.0)
A periodic newsletter to keep clients informed of developments in Census products and services. Highlights recent and forthcoming releases, provides comments on Census data and advises of user forums. This issue includes the following contents:

2006 Census QuickMaps Templates, 2007 (cat. no. 2058.0)
The following 2006 Census QuickMaps templates are provided as a guide to the topics which will be available via QuickMaps when the data from 2006 Census is released. The topic lists may be downloaded free of charge from the Details tab.
QuickMaps are designed to provide users with quick and easy access to thematically mapped Census statistics. Output will be based on Place of Usual Residence. The maps will be available for larger geographies and will depict selected population, ethnicity, education, family, income, labour force and dwelling characteristics. The maps will contain identifiers for clients to recognise selected areas. Identifiers include main roads, rivers, airports and selected areas labelled. A scale bar will be included on each map for reference.
Users will have the opportunity to select a topic and a level of geographic disaggregation that best suits their needs wherever possible.
2006 Census Tables Templates, 2006 (cat. no. 2057.0.66.001)
The 2006 Census Tables templates are provided as a guide to the Census Tables product which will be available when the data from 2006 Census is released. The templates may be downloaded free of charge from the Details tab.
The Census Tables product is designed for clients who are interested in either data on a particular geographic area, or data on a specific topic. Each of the available tables contain key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings, covering most topics on the Census form. These tables are designed to assist in researching, planning and analysing topical issues or geographic areas, enabling comparisons to be made between different areas on a number of social, economic and demographic variables.
Clients will be prompted to select a geographic area, or a topic from a static topic listing, they will then select the table of interest. Once selections are complete they will be presented with the table.These tables will be sourced from the 2006 Community Profile tables and the Census Tables. Tables will only be available for the same geographic area for which the profile is released. For example, if a client requires a topic at CD level they will only be able to access tables from the Basic Community or Place of Enumeration profile as these are the only profiles produced at CD level |
2001 to 2006 Census Collection District Comparability Listing, Aug 2006 (cat. no. 2919.0.55.001) |

At each Census, Collection Districts may be redesigned to accommodate growth in population or to conform to other administrative data. To assist users to compare data for Collection Districts which changed between the 2001 and 2006 Censuses, a comparability code has been allocated to pairs of 2001 and 2006 Collection Districts. The resultant listing, which includes all Collection Districts for both 2001 and 2006, indicates the degree to which the boundary of a Collection District has changed between the 2001 and 2006 Censuses. The data is supplied as a comma delimited text file with an accompanying explanation of the meaning of each code.

Australian Demographic Statistics, Sep 2006 (cat. no. 3101.0)
| This quarterly publication contains the most recent estimates of the resident populations (ERP) of Australia and the states and territories based on the results of the Census of Population and Housing held on 7 August 2001 (with various adjustments described in paragraph 4). The publication contains the latest available statistics on births, deaths (including infant deaths) and overseas and interstate migration. In addition, the publication includes estimates of the resident population by age groups, major population regions and experimental estimates and projections of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. It also includes projected resident populations, projected number of households and projected average household size. Periodically, articles on specific demographic topics will be released on the ABS web site in conjunction with this publication. |
Causes of Death, Australia, 2005 (cat. no. 3303.0)
This publication brings together statistics and indicators for deaths, including perinatal deaths, registered in Australia in 2005. These statistics have been compiled from data made available to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in each state or territory.
All deaths registered in 2005 have been coded using the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) as released by the World Health Organisation. |
Suicides, Australia, 2005 (cat. no. 3309.0)
This publication presents summary statistics on deaths registered in Australia where the underlying cause of death was determined to be suicide. These statistics were compiled from data made available to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and coroners in each state or territory. Data are presented for suicide deaths registered in the years 1995 to 2005, by sex and age group, and method of suicide. State and territory death rates from suicide are also presented.
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey: Summary Booklet, 2004-05 (cat. no. 4715.0.55.006)
The 2004–05 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) is the largest Indigenous health survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The survey collected health-related information from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia. This booklet provides a summary of the main results from the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey 2004–05 (cat. no. 4715.0). |

| This publication contains estimates of the resident population of Local Government Areas (LGAs), Statistical Divisions (SDs), Statistical Districts, Remoteness Areas (RAs) and states and territories of Australia at 30 June 2001, 2005 and 2006, according to the 2006 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC). For the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, estimates for Statistical Subdivisions (SSDs) are also included. Estimates for 2001 are final estimates, based on results of the 2001 Census of Population and Housing, while estimates for 2005 are revised (and denoted 2005r) and estimates for 2006 are preliminary (and denoted 2006p).
The 2006 Census of Population and Housing was conducted on 8 August 2006. Initial estimates for 30 June 2006, based on the 2006 Census, will be available in a special issue of this publication planned for release in late July 2007. The final 2006 Census-based SLA and LGA estimates for June 2002 through to June 2006 are intended to be released in August 2008, in Population Growth and Distribution, Australia (cat. no. 2035.0).
Participation in Sports and Physical Recreation, Australia, 2005-06 (cat. no. 4177.0)
This publication presents results from the 2005-06 Multi-Purpose Household Survey (MPHS) relating to participation in sports and physical recreation activities. The survey obtained data about the characteristics of persons aged 15 years and over who participated in sport and physical recreation activities as a player, competitor or person who physically undertakes the activity. People who were involved as coaches, umpires or club officials are excluded from the data.
