NEW SOUTH WALES In 2011, there were 146 victims of homicide in New South Wales of whom 67% were male and 33% female. Victims of homicide knew their offender in 66% of cases, with 17% being victimised by a partner. There were 6,001 victims of sexual assault in New South Wales of whom 5,007 (83%) were female. The profile of relationship of offender to victim was different for male and female victims: 3.2% of male victims of sexual assault were victimised by a partner and 13% by a stranger, whereas 10% of female victims of sexual assault were victimised by a partner and 19% by a stranger. Among non-Indigenous victims of sexual assault, 19% were victimised by a stranger, compared with 9.9% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims. In 2011, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in New South Wales were victims of sexual assault at three and a half times the rate of non-Indigenous persons (257 victims per 100,000 persons compared to 73 victims per 100,000 persons). By contrast, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were victims of robbery at almost half the rate for non-Indigenous persons (28 victims per 100,000 persons compared to 60 victims per 100,000 persons).
